A small homemade bomb exploded in the Shwe Tyi Tha neighbourhood, which is located 12 mi/20 km north of Yangon, on 19 October 2008. Authorities stated that one person was killed in the blast at the residential area at approximately 1730 local time (1100 UTC). Police officials released no further details on the incident. The bombing was the second such incident over the course of the weekend in Yangon; a bombing occurred near a soccer field in the northeastern suburb of Yankin Township on 18 October. Officials reportedly defused another bomb on that same day.Burma's (Myanmar's) ruling military junta has blamed armed exiled groups and ethnic separatist rebels for both bombings. It was not immediately clear if the bombings were related or if there were specific targets.
