Burma
Security along Pakistan border
17 Mar 2009
Burma's (Myanmar's) military government announced today that security along the border with Bangladesh would be reinforced amid growing tensions between the two nations. There were also reports that Burma's (Myanmar's) navy has positioned several military vessels in the Bay of Bengal near the maritime border with Bangladesh. Bangladeshi paramilitary border patrol agents stated that they could see increased numbers of security forces across the border in Myanmar allegedly preparing to build a fence. The two countries have had a tenuous relationship since Burma (Myanmar) officials granted an international drilling company rights to a disputed offshore site near Bangladesh. The stretch of water in the Bay of Bengal is claimed by both nations.
