Protests continue in Sofia
16 Jan 2009
Protests continued in Sofia for the third consecutive day on 16 January 2009. The rally began at 1100 local time and was held in front of the Parliament building. Security measures were again strictly implemented to discourage violence similar to what occurred on 14 January, and reports so far indicate that the demonstration was peaceful.
Sofia city officials have authorized five more days of protests. Approved venues include areas near Parliament and Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, while the permitted times for actions are from 1130 to 1930 local time. The size of the protest is expected to grow over the 17-18 January weekend, due to the greater availability of participants to attend. Protesters have also stated that they will support an already planned rally by police officers at the park near the Interior Ministry office on 17 January. In light of the increased size and expected traffic disruptions, city officials will close Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard from 1030 to 1930 local time from 17 to 20 January.
