Protests continue in Sofia
15 Jan 2009
Protesters are scheduled to meet on 15 January 2009 for a second day of rallies in Sofia, the Bulgarian capital. Organisers stated that a protest rally will begin at 1100 local time in front of the Parliament building. Several students', farmers' and environmental groups are expected to attend. Organizers indicated that they will avoid actions that will incite police officers in an effort to prevent a repeat of the violent protests that occurred a day earlier. On 14 January riot police officers using batons and tear gas violently dispersed protesters who were reportedly instigated by football fans; the police action led to further unrest by the crowd. Nearly 200 people were arrested in relation to the violence on 14 January. Several protesters have been admitted to local hospitals, and damage to public transportation infrastructure has been reported. Areas in and around the Parliament building remain closed on 15 January in light of the ongoing unrest.
