Homemade bomb explosion in Sofia

A homemade bomb detonated on the first floor of an apartment building in Sofia’s city center on the night of 2 September 2008 after two men allegedly found a plastic bag containing the device and picked it up. The incident occurred near the Palace of Justice on the corner of Alabin and Knyaz Boris I streets. Police officials suspect that the two men -- who were seriously injured -- may have been attempting to plant the low-power bomb themselves. ASI Comment: Despite the proximity to the Palace of Justice, there is no indication that the facility was the intended target. Such incidents are relatively common in Sofia and are usually related to organized criminal activity.
