Violent protested erupted in the affluent Morumbi district of Sao Paulo

On 16 October 2008 a violent protested erupted in the affluent Morumbi district of Sao Paulo, where striking state police officers and other union activists clashed with anti-riot police officers. The striking officers, who have demanded a pay increase, attempted to access a state government building and became confrontational when they were blocked by riot police officers, who fired tear gas, rubber bullets and stun grenades. At least 22 people sustained minor injuries in the clashes.
