Rio de Janeiro’s Tom Jobim International Airport closed due to heavy fog

On 28 June 2010 authorities closed Rio de Janeiro’s Tom Jobim International Airport (SBGL/GIG) at 0600 local time (0900 UTC) as a result of heavy fog. The airport reopened for takeoffs at approximately 0700 local time (1000 UTC), but landing operations remain suspended. Officials have diverted incoming flights at SBGL/GIG to Belo Horizonte’s Tancredo Neves International Airport (SBCF/CNF). Rio’s Santos Dumont Airport (SBRJ/SDU) has also suspended landings as a result of the fog.
