Hundreds buried in Rio mudslide

On 8 April 2010 a mudslide struck the Morro do Bumba slum in the city of Niteroi, which is part of the Rio de Janeiro greater metropolitan area. Authorities estimate that the landslide buried more than 200 people. Workers have reportedly rescued 56 survivors thus far, but stated that the latest landslide is likely to significantly raise the death toll in the state of Rio de Janeiro, which stood at 153 prior to the event.
