New constitution for Bhutan
22 Jul 2008
On 21 July 2008 the Kingdom of Bhutan formally adopted a new constitution that transforms the country from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy. Bhutan's king was the first to sign the constitutional document followed by the leaders of the first democratically elected National Assembly and Council. The king will remain the head of state and maintain several important powers, but Parliament now has the authority to impeach the king with a two-thirds majority vote. Several royal powers have also been limited.
