Railway Workers Launch Strike Following Rail Crash

16 Feb 2010
Belgian rail workers launched an unannounced strike on 16 February 2010 to highlight safety concerns following a deadly commuter train collision outside Brussels the previous day that killed 18 people and injured more than 100 others. The drivers staged the unannounced walkout to protest what they claim are the stressful working conditions that may have played a role in the crash. The strike is causing widespread delays and cancellations in Belgium. Meanwhile, international Eurostar train services in Belgium remained suspended for a second consecutive day as an investigation into the crash continues. All Eurostar services into and out of Brussels were canceled, while other high-speed rail services are operating with delays. Commuter buses are being used to transport rail passengers affected by the cancellations. Officials are advising Eurostar passengers to defer or cancel upcoming travel plans due to an expected reduction in capacity over the next few days.
