Bomb expolsion at Independence Day celebrations
07 Jul 2008
A bomb exploded at a crowded concert in Minsk on 4 July 2008. The explosion occurred during Independence Day celebrations at the Hero City memorial in downtown Minsk. Authorities stated that the bomb injured approximately 50 people who were treated for minor injuries at the scene and at local hospitals. President Alexander Lukashenko was in attendance at the concert and was reportedly not far from the bomb when it exploded. Lukashenko was uninjured and was apparently not the intended target of the attack. Police officers have opened a criminal investigation into the incident, which they classified as an act of "hooliganism." Reports indicate another unexploded bomb was found and defused at another location in Minsk. No other details regarding the second bomb were reported.
