Security heightened at airports
09 Apr 2010
On 9 April 2010 authorities heightened security at Bangladeshi airports after receiving intelligence warnings of possible hijackings or terrorist attacks. Security has been tightened at Dhaka's Shahjalal International Airport, Chittagong's Shah Amanat International Airport and Sylhet's Osmani International Airport. The Bangladeshi government has raised concerns about terrorist attacks during the upcoming war trials of individuals accused of war crimes during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, in which Bangladesh, then known as East Pakistan, seceded from West Pakistan. The trials are expected to implicate members of Jamaat-e-Islami, the country's largest Islamist political party.
