Election results released

On 1 January 2009 Bangladesh's Election Commission released the results of the country's parliamentary elections, indicating that the Awami League won 230 out of the 299 seats up for election, while the Bangladesh Nationalist Party won 29 seats, the Jatiya Party won 27, five other small parties won a total of nine seats, and independent candidates won the remaining four seats. The new members of the Bangladeshi National Parliament will most likely be sworn in on 4 January, according to reports.
