Shortage of air traffic controllers causes delays at Sydney airport
03 Oct 2008
Aviation officials at Sydney's Kingsford Smith International Airport (YSSY/SYD) announced that a shortage of air traffic controllers has caused significant flight delays on 3 October 2008. Reports indicate that prolonged labour negotiations with employees have resulted in gaps in air traffic coverage. Authorities stated that both domestic and international flights have been affected, with some flights being delayed as much as 50 minutes. The overall number of aircraft per hour at the airport has reportedly been reduced because of safety concerns. Although the staff shortages are likely to continue, airport spokesmen have stated that operations will be back to normal by 4 October.
