Qantas baggage handlers strike

On 30 March 2009 Qantas baggage handlers launched a strike that affected domestic and international flights at Qantas terminals in Brisbane, Sydney, Perth and Adelaide. Flights from Kingsford Smith International Airport (YSSY/SYD) in Sydney were delayed for up to an hour, while travellers at Adelaide Airport (YPAD/ADL) experienced delays of up to two hours. Many passengers were forced to leave the airports without their luggage. The Transport Workers Union (TWU) organised the strike to demand higher security standards for airport staff and a halt to the practice of outsourcing jobs.
