Melbourne dock workers strike
14 May 2009
Port Melbourne's dockworkers announced that they will stage a strike after negotiations for pay raises broke down. Union members are reportedly going to stage a three-day work stoppage beginning on 14 May at Web docks 3, 4, and 5. Maritime officials stated that the strike is expected to disrupt the offloading of two large container ships from Europe. Representatives of the dock management company Asciano stated that more than two years of wage negotiations failed when the dockworkers demanded an immediate increase in hourly pay. Union leaders warned that the dockworkers will stage further strikes unless Asciano managers agree to end the industrial dispute.
