Heatwave in the state of Victoria - worst for 100 years

29 Jan 2009
Thousands of residents were without power on 28 January 2009 as a record-setting heat wave continued to wreak havoc across Victoria state. Powercor and CitiPower representatives reported that at least 100,000 homes in Melbourne and Geelong have experienced blackouts because the record temperatures are causing disruptions to the power network. Meteorologists warned that temperatures would continue to top 109 degrees Fahrenheit/43 degrees Celsius throughout the rest of the week and into the weekend. According to the National Climate Centre, the heat wave is the worst in southern Australia in the past 100 years
