Cyclone Ului on Queenslands coast in Australia

22 Mar 2010
Tropical Cyclone Ului made landfall along the Queensland coast in northeastern Australia on 21 March 2010. The storm battered the resort coast with strong winds of up to 124 mph/107 kt that downed trees and knocked out power to thousands of homes and businesses. Although there have been no reports of any deaths or serious injuries, Queensland state authorities warned that the system could still cause significant flooding as it moves inland. Cyclone Ului was downgraded to a rain depression after making landfall and is expected to weaken further in the coming days. Tourists staying at resorts along Queensland’s coast near the Great Barrier Reef had reportedly been evacuated several days ago in anticipation of the storm making landfall in the region.
