Union workers let passengers travel without paying fares

On 19 August 2010 protesting subway workers permitted passengers to pass through the turnstiles without paying on six lines of the Buenos Aires metro system. The labour action -- which has affected services at the stations of Carabobo (Line A), Federico Lacroze (Line B), Constitucion (Line C), Congreso de Tucuman (Line D), Plaza de los Virreyes (Line E) and Once (Line H) -- is intended to pressure the government to recognize the leadership of the workers’ union, an offshoot of the authorized subway workers union. Protest leaders threatened to stage a strike the following week if their demands are not met.
