Travellers should anticipate significant transportation disruptions in the coming days

16 Jul 2008
More than 200,000 protesters attended a rally against a proposed tax increase on agricultural exports at the Monumento a los Españoles in Buenos Aires on 15 July 2008. Meanwhile, approximately 90,000 supporters of President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner held a counter-demonstration in front of Congress; both rallies were peaceful. The Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of Congress, narrowly approved the tax increase on 5 July. The Senate will vote on the proposed tax increase on agricultural exports on 16 July. Although Kirchner's center-left Front for Victory coalition has a majority, the vote is expected to be very close. If the tax increase passes, opponents of the measure will likely launch another round of protests throughout the country.
