Residents of the Villa 31 slum are blocking the Illia highway in the Retiro area of southern Buenos Aires

Approximately 100 residents of the Villa 31 slum are blocking the Illia highway in the Retiro area of southern Buenos Aires on 19 November 2008. The protesters opened up one lane of the highway approximately an hour after launching the demonstration. Reports indicate that police officers have arrived in the area. The protesters have burned several tires along the highway. The demonstration has caused major traffic disruptions in the area, especially along Avenida Lugones. The protesters are angry with a number of municipal policies, including a delay in a water delivery project.
