Two major terrorist attack plots targeting airports foiled

04 Nov 2008
Algerian officials have announced that two major terrorist attack plots targeting airports in the country have been foiled. Details regarding the development remain sketchy, but militants from the al-Qaeda Organization in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) were allegedly planning to carry out attacks at Algiers' Houari Boumedienne Airport (DAAG/ALG) and Hassi Massoud's Oued Irara-Krim Belkacem Airport (DUAH/HME) as well as other unnamed airport facilities. In Algiers, militants planned to use a suicide car bomb to attack the facility, while an aircraft hijacking was planned for the airport in Hassi Massoud, an important location for the country's oil industry. It is not known how far in the planning process the plots were. In reaction to the development, the government has reportedly turned over the management of airport security at all airports in the country to the army for the time being.
