Algeria
Security measures increased ahead of Ramadan
26 Aug 2008
Sources reported on 25 August 2008 that officials have stepped up security measures ahead of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan throughout the country and especially in the central and eastern provinces following last week's multiple terrorist attacks. Approximately 2,600 security forces have been deployed throughout the country, with a concentration in the eastern Tizi Ouzou, Bouira and Bejaia provinces. The Algerian military has increased checkpoints along all major highways and in areas known to be terrorist strongholds. Security personnel have also begun to use sophisticated equipment that allows them to scan vehicles and baggage for hidden explosives. Plain-clothed security personnel have been stationed throughout major cities, especially in crowded public areas such as markets, mosques and other locations that attract a high number of people.
Despite the increased security measures, sources reported that residents fear more terror-related strikes. Locals, especially in the city of Bouira and the Bejaia province, stated that there are increasing rumors of impending strikes and residents have begun to change daily routines in anticipation of such violence, including limiting travel, sports and outdoor activities.
