New safe measures to protect foreigners
05 Sep 2008
Algerian government sources announced on 4 September 2008 that new security measures will be instituted at ports and airports throughout Algeria in an attempt to safeguard foreigners against possible terrorist attacks. Officials stated that the measures were developed in response to a credible threat from the al-Qaeda Organization in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) to stage attacks on foreigners at various entry points into the country. The threat reportedly named Algiers' Houari Boumediene International Airport (DAAG/ALG) as one of the potential target facilities. The new security measures include the installation of additional recording and other monitoring equipment throughout the facilities and the replacement of various airport personnel with security personnel.
