29 Sep 2008
On 29 September 2008 a car laden with explosives was detonated in the town of Dellys, located approximately 20 mi/40 km east of Algiers. Reports indicate that at least three people were killed and six others injured in the blast. All of those killed were reportedly Algerian soldiers. Authorities stated that the driver of the vehicle detonated the explosives in a suicide attack just outside a military barracks. Army commanders claim that soldiers on guard at the entrance to the barracks opened fire on the approaching vehicle and prevented the driver from entering the military facility. The barracks are located in the Taguedempt area in western Dellys.
Dellys is a small town on the Mediterranean coast that was the site of a much larger suicide bombing is September 2007 that killed at least 30 people and injured 47. The bombing occurred at barracks for Algerian naval recruits. Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) claimed responsibility for the 2007 bombing in Dellys; no group has yet claimed responsibility for the most recent attack.
